What Villanueva de Tapia is really like
Villanueva de Tapia is a small farming village in the Nororiental comarca of Málaga province, wedged where Málaga, Córdoba and Granada meet. It was founded in the early 17th century by Pedro de Tapia, whose name it still carries. The landscape is rolling olive groves rather than coast, and the working economy is olive oil and cereal. The village core is compact, built around the Iglesia de San Pedro and a handful of plazas. Most people who come here have family ties, own a rural property, or are touring the inland olive country between Antequera and the Embalse de Iznájar, whose reservoir shoreline lies a short drive north. It is quiet year-round, busier during local ferias and the autumn olive harvest, and appeals to travellers wanting genuine inland Andalucía away from the resorts.
The inland drive north from the airport
This is an inland journey of roughly 95 kilometres, almost entirely on fast roads. From the airport you join the A-7 and then the A-45 motorway climbing north towards Antequera, crossing the mountain pass at Puerto de las Pedrizas where the terrain becomes noticeably higher and more open. Near Antequera the route picks up the A-92 towards Granada, then leaves it onto the A-333, a single-carriageway road that winds through olive country towards Iznájar and Villanueva de Tapia. The first part is smooth motorway; the final stretch is slower, with curves and gradients as the road threads between hills. Expect around an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half. There are service stations near Antequera if you want to stop, since options thin out on the A-333.
Practical tips for this specific route
Because Villanueva de Tapia sits well inland, plan for the drive being closer to ninety minutes than the short hops coastal resorts advertise; give yourself margin on the return to catch a flight. Fuel and food are easiest to sort around Antequera before the A-333, as the last stretch runs through farmland with few facilities. Give your driver the exact street address or, better, a pin, since the village lanes are narrow and satnav can be vague around the small centre. In winter the higher ground near the Pedrizas pass can bring fog or rain even when the coast is clear, so allow extra time. If you are heading onward to the Iznájar reservoir or towards Lucena, mention it when booking so the drop-off point makes sense.
