The route runs east from the airport almost entirely on the A-7 coastal motorway, passing Málaga city, Rincón de la Victoria and Torre de Benagalbón before reaching the Vélez-Málaga exits. It is a fast, straightforward drive of roughly 40 minutes in normal traffic, with sea views on the right for much of the way. To reach the old town you leave the motorway and follow the MA-3203 corridor inland along the Vélez river valley; the last stretch into the historic centre involves tight, sloping streets where larger vehicles often stop at the edge of the pedestrian zone. If your address is in Torre del Mar or Caleta de Vélez, the transfer stays closer to the coast and avoids the hill climb entirely.

Tell the driver whether your destination is upper Vélez-Málaga, Torre del Mar or Caleta de Vélez, as they are separated by several kilometres and the final approach differs. For addresses inside the old town, provide the nearest square or main street (for example near the Fortaleza or Plaza de las Carmelitas), since GPS pins often fail on the pedestrianised streets and drivers may need a drop-off point at the perimeter. Traffic on the A-7 through Málaga slows during weekday rush hours and on summer weekends heading to the coast, so allow extra time for flights. Rincón de la Victoria's stretch can also back up. If you're continuing to villages like Cómpeta, Sayalonga or Nerja, confirm it in advance so the driver plans the inland roads accordingly.
