Vélez de Benaudalla and its Nazarí garden
Vélez de Benaudalla sits inland in Granada province, just north of Motril where the Guadalfeo valley narrows between the Sierra de Lújar and the Rules reservoir. Its best-known site is the Jardín Nazarí, a small terraced Moorish-era garden with water channels and grottoes behind the old town. The old quarter has steep, narrow streets climbing toward the ruins of a former Nasrid fortress. Most people who come here are day-trippers heading up from the coast, walkers exploring the river gorge and reservoir tracks, and residents of the quieter inland villages between Salobreña, Órgiva and the western Alpujarra. It is a stop-off point rather than a resort, and the surrounding farmland grows tropical fruit like avocado and cherimoya on the warmer valley slopes.
The coastal motorway and the climb up the Guadalfeo
The drive runs almost entirely on dual carriageway. From the airport you take the A-7 motorway east along the coast, passing Nerja, Almuñécar and the Salobreña exits, with sea views for much of the way and several tunnels through the headlands near La Herradura. Approaching Motril you join the A-44 heading inland toward Granada, and the road climbs into the Guadalfeo gorge through tunnels alongside the Rules dam and reservoir before the Vélez de Benaudalla exit. The whole trip is around an hour and twenty minutes in normal traffic. The final approach leaves the motorway for a short local road into the village, where the streets become narrow and steep near the old town, so drivers often stop at the lower entrance rather than driving up to the centre.
Practical tips for this transfer
Vélez de Benaudalla has no train and limited bus links, so a direct transfer avoids changing at Motril or Granada. If your accommodation is inside the old town, give the driver a landmark such as the Jardín Nazarí or the main square rather than only a street name, because the upper lanes are too narrow for larger vehicles and a short walk uphill is often unavoidable. Bring cash for local bars and small shops, as card acceptance is patchy in the village. If you plan day trips, the same coastal corridor puts Salobreña, Almuñécar and the Motril beaches within easy reach, and the A-44 continues up to Granada in under an hour. Summer afternoons see heavier traffic on the coastal stretch near the resort exits, so an earlier pick-up helps.
