Trevélez sits at around 1,476 m on the southern flank of the Sierra Nevada, one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in Spain. It climbs the hillside in three tiers — Barrio Bajo, Barrio Medio and Barrio Alto — with narrow whitewashed streets and flat-roofed houses typical of the Alpujarra. The dry, cold air is why the village is known nationally for jamón de Trevélez, cured in the many secaderos you'll pass. Most visitors are hikers using it as a base for the trail up Mulhacén, mainland Spain's highest peak, or walkers exploring the Poqueira valley villages of Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira nearby. Summer brings trekkers and day-trippers; the trout-filled Río Trevélez and mountain restaurants stay busy from spring to autumn.

The route runs east along the A-7 coastal motorway past Nerja and Almuñécar towards Motril, then turns inland on the A-44 before branching onto the A-348 through Vélez de Benaudalla and Órgiva. This is where the mountain driving begins. From Órgiva the road becomes the GR-421, a slow, tightly winding lane that threads through Lanjarón, Pampaneira, Pórtugos and Busquístar, gaining altitude the whole way. The final stretch into Trevélez is a series of sharp switchbacks along the valley wall. Expect roughly two and a half to three hours in total; the first half is easy motorway, the second half is genuinely twisting mountain road. Passengers prone to travel sickness will notice the last hour, and views open dramatically as you climb above 1,000 m.

Trevélez is cold at altitude even when the coast is warm, so bring layers regardless of season; snow and ice can affect the GR-421 approach between December and March, and a driver may take the longer Granada-side route if conditions demand. There is no fast road for the final leg, so build the extra time into onward plans. Parking inside the village is limited and the upper barrios are only reachable on foot, so agree a drop-off point in the Barrio Bajo near the main square where vehicles can turn. If you plan to buy jamón to take home, do it before departure — shops close early. Stock up on cash and any medication in Órgiva or on the coast, as village services are minimal.
