Golf, polo and the marina at Sotogrande
Sotogrande sits in the municipality of San Roque, in Cádiz province, close to the Gibraltar border. It's a planned residential resort built around golf and polo rather than mass tourism. Golfers come for Valderrama, the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, La Reserva and the San Roque Club. Summer brings the polo season at Santa María Polo Club and sailing families to Puerto Sotogrande, the marina lined with restaurants and moorings. The area splits into Sotogrande Costa near the sea and Sotogrande Alto up the hill toward the courses. Nearby you'll find Torreguadiaro's beach and chiringuitos and the quieter sands of Alcaidesa toward La Línea. It's busiest from June to September and during autumn golf tournaments; much calmer in winter.
The drive down the AP-7 from Málaga
The route runs southwest along the coast for roughly 105 km, mostly on fast dual carriageway. From the airport you join the A-7/AP-7 and pass Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Marbella and Estepona. The toll AP-7 keeps traffic moving and bypasses the town centres, while the free A-7 is slower and busier through Marbella in summer. Past Estepona the road climbs slightly with sea views toward Gibraltar and the Rock becomes visible on clear days. The final stretch leaves the motorway near San Roque and Guadiaro, then follows local roads to the resort's several entrances. Expect around 75 to 90 minutes in normal conditions, longer on summer Fridays and during the polo and golf weeks when coastal traffic thickens around Marbella.

Reaching the right entrance and gate
Sotogrande is large and gated in parts, so tell your driver the exact area, not just "Sotogrande". Give the zone — Sotogrande Costa, Sotogrande Alto, the marina, or a specific golf club like Valderrama or La Reserva — plus the villa or urbanización name and any security-gate details, as private roads inside the resort aren't always fully mapped by phone navigation. If you're heading to the marina, note that parking near the restaurants fills quickly in summer. Choose the AP-7 tolls if you land on a busy summer afternoon to skip Marbella congestion. There are supermarkets in Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro and Torreguadiaro for a quick stop before self-catering stays, and Gibraltar's airport and shops are only a short drive further on for day trips.
