What Sitio de Calahonda is like
Sitio de Calahonda is a large hillside urbanisation in Mijas Costa, sitting between Fuengirola and Marbella and split by the coastal road into an upper residential zone and a beachfront strip. It has long been popular with British, Scandinavian and Irish residents and holiday-home owners, so you'll find bars, supermarkets and restaurants around the Calypso and El Zoco commercial centres. Playa de Calahonda and the smaller coves below it are quiet family beaches with chiringuitos. Golfers head to nearby Calanova, Miraflores and La Siesta courses. Summer brings families to rented apartments and villas, while the mild winter draws long-stay retirees. The area is spread out over steep streets, so most visitors arrive with a specific address rather than a single centre.
The drive from the airport along the A-7
The route runs southwest from Málaga Airport along the A-7 coastal motorway, the same corridor that serves Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola. It's dual carriageway almost the whole way, passing the Fuengirola exits before reaching the Sitio de Calahonda junctions. The toll AP-7 is an alternative in heavy summer traffic but adds little for this distance. The final part is the memorable one: Calahonda's streets climb steeply away from the coast in a maze of loops and cul-de-sacs, and satellite navigation sometimes struggles with the newer urbanisation roads. Expect a smooth 40-minute run in normal conditions, longer on July and August weekends when the Fuengirola stretch of the A-7 backs up around the beach exits.
Practical tips for arriving in Calahonda
Because Sitio de Calahonda has no single centre, give your driver the exact urbanisation name, street and block, plus any gate code, rather than just "Calahonda". Popular reference points include the Calypso and El Zoco commercial centres and the Riviera del Sol area next door, which is often lumped in with Calahonda. Many apartment complexes have underground parking with low barriers and multiple entrances, so note which one your rental uses. There is no direct train; the nearest station is Fuengirola, several kilometres away, which makes a pre-booked door-to-door transfer genuinely useful here. If you're arriving late, buy essentials at the airport, as the smaller local supermarkets close earlier than the coastal resorts you may be used to.
