Sierra Nevada and the Pradollano ski base
Sierra Nevada is the ski resort above Granada, with its base village at Pradollano sitting around 2,100 metres — the highest ski area in Western Europe. The resort runs from Pradollano up to the Borreguiles mid-station via gondola, with pistes climbing towards Pico Veleta. Most visitors arrive between December and April for skiing and snowboarding; families fill the beginner slopes, while stronger skiers head for the higher runs. In summer the same roads bring hikers heading for Mulhacén, mainland Spain's highest peak at 3,479 metres, and mountain bikers. Pradollano itself is a compact, stepped village of hotels, apartments, rental shops and bars set on a steep slope, so expect stairs, ramps and lifts between accommodation levels rather than a flat resort layout.
The drive up the A-92 and A-395
The route leaves Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport on the motorway network towards Granada, following the A-45 and A-92 inland across the countryside of Antequera and the interior of Granada province. This first stretch is fast dual-carriageway and covers most of the distance. Approaching Granada, the road joins the A-395, which climbs from the city up towards the resort. This final section is the part passengers notice: a steady mountain ascent with long curves and switchbacks, gaining well over a thousand metres of altitude before reaching Pradollano. Total driving time is usually around two to two and a quarter hours in good conditions. In winter the upper A-395 can carry snow and ice, and traffic control points sometimes require chains or restrict access during heavy snowfall.

Practical tips for the Sierra Nevada transfer
Give the driver your exact hotel or apartment name in Pradollano — the village is tiered and many properties can only be reached from a particular access road or parking level, so a precise address saves circling. If you're carrying skis, snowboards or boot bags, mention it when booking so the vehicle has room. Pack a warm layer in your hand luggage: you leave a mild coast and arrive above 2,000 metres, where it can be well below freezing even when Málaga is sunny. During peak weekends and school holidays the A-395 and resort car parks fill early, so an earlier departure helps. In summer, if you're heading beyond Pradollano towards the high trailheads, confirm the drop-off point in advance, as vehicle access up the mountain is restricted seasonally.
