What Sayalonga is known for
Sayalonga is a small white village in the Axarquía, the hilly farming country east of Málaga. Its best-known landmark is the Cementerio Redondo, an unusual circular cemetery, and the village keeps its Moorish street plan with steep, narrow lanes around the church of Santa Catalina. The area is loquat (níspero) and muscatel grape country, and there is a well-attended Día del Níspero food fair each spring. The outlying hamlet of Corumbela, with its old minaret-tower, belongs to the same municipality. Visitors are mostly walkers, rural-house renters and day-trippers combining Sayalonga with neighbouring Cómpeta, Árchez and Algarrobo. It is quiet, residential and not a beach resort, so people come for the countryside, the mountain views towards La Maroma and the village restaurants rather than nightlife.
The drive from the airport to Sayalonga
From Málaga Airport the route heads east, skirting Málaga city on the A-7 coastal motorway. You follow the coast past Rincón de la Victoria and towards Torre del Mar and Vélez-Málaga, then turn inland near Algarrobo. The final stretch climbs on the MA-5103 through terraced hillsides, and the road becomes noticeably narrower and more winding as it rises to the village. Most of the journey is easy motorway driving; the last ten to fifteen minutes are the twisty part. Total distance is around 50 kilometres and the run usually takes just under an hour, longer in summer when the coast road backs up around Torre del Mar. On a clear day the inland section gives long views back over the plain to the Mediterranean.
Practical tips for this route
Give your driver an exact address or the name of your rural house, as Sayalonga's core is pedestrian-heavy and many holiday lets sit on the outskirts or in Corumbela, a separate cluster a few kilometres away. Vehicles usually stop at one of the village entrances rather than in the old centre, so expect a short walk up steep lanes with luggage; pack light or ask about the nearest drop-off point. There is limited public transport, so a pre-booked return to the airport is worth arranging, especially for early flights. Stock up on groceries in Algarrobo or Vélez-Málaga on the way, as village shops keep short hours. If you plan day trips to Cómpeta, Frigiliana or the coast, note that a car is genuinely useful here.
