Santa Margarita and its canals in Roses
Santa Margarita is the canal-and-marina district on the western edge of Roses, on the Gulf of Roses in the Alt Empordà (Girona). It is built around navigable waterways where many villas have their own moorings, and it opens onto Platja de Santa Margarida, a long shallow beach popular with families and, in summer, with French visitors who drive down from over the border. From here you are close to Roses old town and the Ciutadella fortress, the fishing port, and the marina. Empuriabrava's canals sit just across the bay, while Cadaqués, Cap de Creus and the Dalí museum in Figueres are short trips inland. It fills up from June to September and quietens sharply out of season, when many restaurants close.
The long drive up the Mediterranean corridor
This is a long-distance transfer, not a short airport run: Santa Margarita sits at the far northeast corner of Spain, so the route follows the Mediterranean corridor almost end to end. From Málaga you take the A-7/AP-7 motorway past Murcia, Alicante, Valencia and Tarragona, skirt Barcelona, then continue north towards Girona before turning off for Castelló d'Empúries and Roses on the C-260. It is motorway for nearly the whole way, with tolls on stretches of the AP-7, and the terrain shifts from the Costa del Sol coast to the flat Empordà plain near the end. Expect the better part of a full day behind the wheel. The final approach into Santa Margarita runs through narrow residential streets between the canals, where drivers slow right down.
Planning a transfer this long, and the last stretch
Because this is close to a full day's driving, treat it as such: agree stops in advance for meals and fuel, and be realistic about arrival time if your flight lands late. For a journey of this length, many travellers compare it with flying into Girona or Barcelona airports and transferring from there — worth checking before you book. Give the exact canal address and, ideally, the villa's mooring or street number, as Santa Margarita's waterside streets loop and repeat and satnavs often struggle. Some access roads over the canals are one-way. If you are arriving out of season, note that few shops and restaurants stay open, so plan to bring supplies. In peak summer the roads into Roses and the beachfront are slow on weekend changeover days.
