What Sanlúcar La Mayor is known for
Sanlúcar La Mayor sits on the Aljarafe ridge about 18 km west of Seville, in the countryside heading toward Huelva. It is a working town rather than a resort, with the Mudéjar-brick churches of Santa María, San Pedro and San Eustaquio in its old centre, and streets that thin out into olive groves and orchards. Just outside town stand the Solúcar solar towers, the tall PS10 and PS20 concentrating-solar plants whose mirror fields are a genuine local landmark. Visitors are mostly here for work, family, or as a quiet base near Seville and the edge of the Doñana area via Aznalcázar. Nearby villages include Bollullos de la Mitación, Benacazón, Umbrete and Villanueva del Ariscal, the latter known for its wine.
The drive from Málaga along the A-92
The route runs almost entirely on motorway. From the airport you join the A-7 and MA-20 around Málaga, then climb inland on the A-45 to Antequera before turning onto the A-92, the main artery crossing Andalusia. This is open, rolling farmland through Estepa and Osuna, dry and golden in summer, green after winter rain. Approaching Seville you skirt the city on the SE-30/SE-40 ring roads and pick up the A-49 toward Huelva, leaving it at the Sanlúcar La Mayor exit. The final stretch is short, climbing gently onto the Aljarafe. Expect roughly two and a half hours with no toll roads on this itinerary. The terrain is inland throughout — you never see the coast after leaving Málaga.

Practical tips for this route
Because the journey is long and inland, plan a comfort stop — the service areas around Antequera or the Osuna-Écija stretch are the natural halfway points, with fuel and cafés. Sanlúcar La Mayor's old centre has narrow one-way streets near Santa María, so give your driver a precise address; larger vehicles are easier to drop at the edge of the historic core than in it. If your final destination is a cortijo, hotel or one of the outlying developments toward Aznalcázar or Bollullos, share the exact access point, as rural addresses here are not always obvious. Traffic tightens on the SE-30 around Seville at rush hour, so early-morning or midday flights make for a smoother arrival. Summer afternoons are very hot inland — worth knowing if you are travelling with children or older passengers.
