San Martín del Tesorillo and the Guadiaro valley
San Martín del Tesorillo sits inland in the Guadiaro river valley, on the Cádiz side of the border with Málaga province. It became an independent municipality in 2018 after separating from Jimena de la Frontera, and it keeps a farming character built around citrus groves and flower nurseries rather than tourism. Most visitors are people with family here, seasonal agricultural workers, or golfers and residents based in nearby Sotogrande, San Enrique de Guadiaro and Secadero who prefer a quieter, cheaper village to stay in. The centre is small and walkable, arranged around the main square and church, with everyday shops and bars used by locals. It's a practical base for reaching the coast at Torreguadiaro and the Sotogrande golf courses a short drive south.
The drive from Málaga Airport down the coast
The route runs almost entirely on fast road. You leave Málaga Airport on the A-7 coastal motorway heading southwest, passing Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Marbella and Estepona. Past Estepona you can stay on the A-7 or switch to the AP-7 toll road to skip the busiest stretches; either way the coast stays on your left most of the trip. After passing Manilva and the Sotogrande area you turn inland near San Enrique de Guadiaro, following the valley road along the Guadiaro river up to Tesorillo. The final stretch is a normal two-lane country road through farmland, not mountain switchbacks, so it's an easy approach. Expect around ninety minutes in normal traffic, longer on summer weekends when the Marbella and Estepona sections back up.

Practical tips for this route
Give the driver a specific address or reference point. Tesorillo's grid of streets is small but house numbering on the outlying lanes and among the nurseries can be confusing, and some agricultural addresses sit off the main village. If you're actually heading to Sotogrande, Torreguadiaro or San Enrique, say so, because they are separate stops nearer the coast. Local shops and services keep village hours, so arrange any late-arrival needs in advance; there isn't the round-the-clock provision you'd find in a resort town. The AP-7 toll option is worth taking on peak summer Saturdays to cut the Marbella-Estepona congestion. If you plan to explore the coast or golf courses during your stay, consider arranging a return transfer or a car, as public transport up the valley is limited.
