What San José in Cabo de Gata is like
San José is a low-rise village inside the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, in Almería province. People come for the volcanic coastline and the undeveloped beaches: Playa de los Genoveses and Playa de Mónsul both sit a few kilometres south of the village along an unpaved track, and Mónsul's rock arch appeared in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The village itself has a small marina, a sandy town beach, and a handful of restaurants around Calle del Puerto. Hikers use it as a base for the coastal path toward Los Escullos and La Isleta del Moro, and divers work the clear water off the point. It fills up in July and August and stays quiet the rest of the year.
The drive east along the A-7
This is a long transfer, mostly motorway. From the airport you take the A-7 east along the coast, passing Motril, Adra and the greenhouse plains around El Ejido, then skirt Almería city. After Almería you leave the motorway and head south-east toward Retamar and the park boundary, joining the AL-3115. The final stretch runs through open scrub and low volcanic hills with almost no development until San José appears at the coast. Expect close to three hours in normal traffic. The last section is a regular two-lane road rather than anything steep or hairpinned, but it is slower than the motorway and there are no services once you enter the park, so it's worth knowing the driving falls into two clear halves.

Practical points for this route
Because the transfer is close to three hours, agree on a pick-up time that accounts for the distance rather than assuming a short hop. In summer San José's few streets and the car park near the town beach get congested, so having a driver drop you at your accommodation avoids circling for parking. If your plan includes Genoveses or Mónsul, note those beaches are reached by a track that closes to cars at capacity in peak season, with a shuttle running instead — a transfer to the village won't take you onto that track. Stock up on water and snacks before you leave the Almería stretch, as options thin out inside the park. Tell your driver the exact street or apartment name, since some lodgings sit on the edges away from the centre.
