Roquetas de Mar sits on the Almería coast and splits into two parts: the old fishing town around the Castillo de Santa Ana and lighthouse, and the modern resort strip built along Playa Serena and Urbanización de Roquetas. Families come for the long, gently shelving beaches, the Aquarium de Roquetas and Mario Park water park, mostly from June to September. Golfers head for Playa Serena Golf, playable year-round thanks to the dry climate. The marina at nearby Aguadulce draws boat owners and diners. Because the resort zone has many hotels and apartment blocks spread over several kilometres, knowing your exact address matters — Playa Serena, the port area and the old town are quite far apart.

The route follows the A-7 Mediterranean motorway east for almost the entire way, so it is dual carriageway most of the journey. After leaving the airport you pass Motril and Salobreña, where the road climbs and winds through the hills of La Contraviesa above the coast, with tunnels and viaducts. Beyond Adra the landscape flattens and turns into the vast sea of greenhouses around El Ejido — a distinctive stretch of white plastic that surprises first-time visitors. The final approach leaves the motorway near Aguadulce or El Parador and drops down to the coast. Expect roughly two to two and a half hours depending on traffic through Motril and around Almería in summer.

This is a long transfer, so it helps to plan the small things. Give the exact hotel or apartment name and street: the Playa Serena hotels, the marina area and the old town have separate access roads, and a wrong entrance adds time. There is a service station near El Ejido if you want a stop on a hot day — worth mentioning in advance for families with young children. If you land late, note that traffic is light and the drive is quicker, but the resort's side streets are poorly lit. For return trips, allow extra buffer in July and August, when the coast road through Motril slows down. Almería city and Cabo de Gata are reachable as day trips if you extend the booking.
