Riogordo in the Axarquía hills
Riogordo is a small inland village in the Axarquía, surrounded by olive groves and the Montes de Málaga. It is best known for El Paso, the open-air Passion play staged over Easter, which draws visitors from across the province to watch hundreds of local actors perform outdoors. The rest of the year it is quiet: whitewashed streets, a local olive oil and cured-meat tradition, and walking routes towards neighbouring Comares, Colmenar and Alfarnate. Most travellers here are people renting rural houses (casas rurales), residents with second homes, and walkers exploring the Montes de Málaga natural area. If you are visiting during Semana Santa, expect the village to be full and parking near the centre to be scarce, so a drop-off matters.
The drive inland via the A-45 and A-356
The route leaves the airport on the MA-20 ring road, joins the A-45 heading north towards Antequera, and climbs away from the coast past Casabermeja. From there it follows the A-356 eastwards towards Vélez-Málaga, with the turn-off up to Riogordo itself. It is roughly 50 kilometres and around 50 minutes in normal traffic. Almost all of it is dual carriageway or well-surfaced main road, so the ride is smooth until the final approach, where the road narrows and winds as it drops into the village. You will notice the landscape change quickly: the coastal sprawl gives way to hills, olive terraces and open countryside within twenty minutes of leaving the airport.
Practical tips for arriving in Riogordo
There is no direct train or convenient bus link to Riogordo, and connections through Málaga city or Vélez-Málaga are slow with luggage, so a direct transfer saves real time. If your accommodation is a casa rural outside the village, send the exact pin location rather than a street name — several rural properties sit on tracks off the A-356 or the surrounding country lanes, and satnav can be vague. The village core has narrow, steep streets, so a driver may set you down at the nearest accessible point rather than at the door. During Semana Santa, road access tightens around El Paso performances; confirm timing so pickup or drop-off avoids the crowds. Stock up on essentials in the village or in nearby Colmenar, as shops are limited.
