Pinos Genil at the mouth of the Sierra Nevada valley
Pinos Genil is a small municipality just east of Granada city, sitting where the Genil river comes down from the mountains. It's a compact village of a few thousand residents, with riverside bars and restaurants along the water and steep streets climbing away from it. People pass through here on the A-395 corridor heading up towards Güéjar Sierra, the Canales reservoir and, in winter, the Sierra Nevada ski station. In summer it draws Granada locals looking for cooler air and shade by the Genil, plus walkers using the paths along the old railway trackbed. It's residential and quiet rather than touristy — expect family homes, a village square and the mountains rising immediately behind, not hotels or nightlife.
The A-92 drive from Málaga Airport to the Genil valley
The journey is almost entirely motorway. From the airport you join the A-7 and then the A-92 inland towards Granada, climbing steadily away from the coast across the open country around Loja and the plain west of Granada. It's a fast, straightforward run of roughly 145 kilometres, usually around an hour and three-quarters. The character changes near the end: you skirt Granada on the ring road, then pick up the A-395 towards Sierra Nevada before turning down into the Genil valley on the local road to Pinos Genil. The final stretch narrows as it follows the river, with the village streets themselves tight and sloping. Most of the drive is easy; only the last few kilometres feel genuinely mountain.

Planning your transfer to Pinos Genil
Give your driver the exact street and house number: Pinos Genil's lanes are narrow and steep, and some upper streets are hard for a car to reach, so a nearby drop-off point may be sensible. If you're continuing up to Sierra Nevada for skiing, remember Pinos Genil is at the bottom of that road, not at the resort — the ski station is a further climb of around forty minutes. In winter carry warm clothing even arriving from the mild coast; the valley is much colder than Málaga. There's little in the way of hotels here, so most passengers are visiting homes or apartments. Málaga is the practical airport for this area alongside Granada's own smaller airport, which has fewer connections.
