From Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport you take the A-7 motorway east along the coast, passing Rincón de la Victoria, Torre del Mar and Nerja. Most of the roughly 90-kilometre run is dual carriageway, so it moves quickly until you reach the Almuñécar area on the Costa Tropical. There the route turns inland and the character changes completely: the road climbs into the hills on a tight, twisting mountain stretch following the Río Verde upstream to Otívar. That final section is short but slow, with hairpins and blind bends, and passengers prone to car sickness will feel it most here. Reckon on around an hour and a half door to door, longer in summer when the coastal motorway near Nerja and the beaches gets busy.

Give the driver an exact address or the name of your rural house before arrival: many Otívar properties are on dispersed rural plots (cortijos) along the mountain road rather than in the village centre, and satnav can send you to the wrong track. Inside the old village, some lanes are too narrow or steep for a car to reach the door, so expect a short walk from the nearest square with luggage. Stock up on groceries in Almuñécar on the way up, as village shops are limited and close early. If you plan to swim in the Río Verde gorge, go in summer when the water is warm and the access road is dry; after heavy rain the mountain road can carry runoff.
