Órgiva is the main town of the western Alpujarras, sitting below the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada above the Guadalfeo valley. Its twin-towered church, Nuestra Señora de la Expiración, marks the old centre, and the Thursday market draws an unusually mixed crowd of local farmers and the long-established international community that settled around here, including the nearby Beneficio settlement. Most visitors use Órgiva as a base for walking the high villages of the Poqueira gorge — Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira — and the spa town of Lanjarón is just down the road. Walkers and cyclists come in spring and autumn; summer stays busy with residents and second-home owners. It is a working town rather than a resort, with everyday shops, ventas and terraces.

The route leaves Málaga airport on the A-7 motorway and runs east along the coast past Nerja and the Granada shoreline towards Motril, roughly the first two thirds of the trip. Near Motril the road turns inland and climbs the A-44 and then the A-348 up the Guadalfeo valley, passing Vélez de Benaudalla and Lanjarón before reaching Órgiva. The change is clear: fast dual carriageway near the sea gives way to a rising two-lane road with bends as you enter the Alpujarra foothills. The final stretch into town is not steep but does narrow. Allow around two hours; the coastal section can slow in July and August, and mist or rain sometimes hangs over the higher inland part in winter.

Órgiva's old centre has narrow, one-way streets, so agree a clear drop-off point in advance — the area around Plaza García Hernández or your accommodation's nearest accessible corner, rather than deep inside the historic core. If you are heading onward to the high villages of the Poqueira, tell the driver, as the road beyond Órgiva climbs sharply and journey times add up quickly. There are limited services between Motril and Órgiva, so use the airport for anything you need. Bring layers even in summer: the coast is warm but Órgiva sits higher and evenings cool down. Winter travellers should note occasional snow on the surrounding mountain roads, though the town itself rarely closes. A booked transfer avoids the awkward rail gap — there is no train to the Alpujarras.
