What Ojén is and who comes here
Ojén is a small whitewashed village in the Sierra Blanca, sitting inland and above Marbella rather than on the coast. Its old core is a knot of steep, narrow streets around the Plaza de Andalucía and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación. The village gave its name to a well-known aniseed aguardiente, and the local Molino del Almazara olive mill still marks its farming past. Most visitors are walkers heading for the Refugio de Juanar, the old hunting lodge and starting point for trails up toward La Concha and the Cruz de Juanar viewpoint over the coast. Others are residents and second-home owners who want quiet a short drive from Marbella. Spring and autumn are the best hiking seasons.
The drive from the airport up into the sierra
The route runs west along the coastal motorway (A-7, with the AP-7 toll road as the faster alternative) toward Marbella, then turns inland onto the A-355. That last stretch climbs steadily away from the coast into the Sierra Blanca, and the road becomes noticeably more winding as it approaches the village. Expect most of the journey to be smooth dual-carriageway driving, followed by ten minutes or so of curves and gradient at the end. The whole trip is usually around 45 minutes depending on traffic through the Marbella corridor, which can slow considerably in July and August. As you gain height the views open back over Marbella and the sea. The village entrance is tight, so larger vehicles are dropped near the edge of the old town.

Practical tips for this transfer
If your accommodation is inside the old town, give the driver the street name in advance and be ready to walk the last short section — many lanes are too narrow or steep for cars, and some are pedestrian-only. If you are staying at the Refugio de Juanar or a rural finca above the village, confirm the exact access track, as some are unpaved and poorly signed after dark. There is no large supermarket in the village itself, so consider stopping in Marbella or at a shopping centre on the coast on the way up if you need supplies. Carry a light jacket even in summer: evenings in the sierra are cooler than on the beach. For hikers, arrange your return pickup time in advance, since taxis are not always waiting in the village.
