The route leaves Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport on the A-7 Autovía del Mediterráneo, heading east and skirting Málaga city before the coast opens up past Rincón de la Victoria and Torre del Mar. Beyond Nerja the road changes character: it threads a long series of tunnels and high viaducts through the cliffs around Maro, La Herradura and Cerro Gordo, one of the more dramatic stretches of motorway in Spain. After Almuñécar and the exit for Salobreña, you reach Motril. The whole journey is dual carriageway almost the entire way, so it moves steadily, roughly 80 minutes without heavy traffic. Passengers prone to motion sickness may notice the tunnels and gentle bends between Nerja and Almuñécar, though there are no tight mountain switchbacks.

Confirm exactly where you're staying: Motril spreads across the inland town centre, the port area, and the beach zones at Playa Granada and Torrenueva, which are several kilometres apart with different motorway exits. If you're catching a ferry to Melilla, allow buffer time, as check-in for vehicles and passengers closes well before departure. For the old town, expect narrow one-way streets near the church and market where a car needs to drop off at the edge rather than at the door. Playa Granada is easiest to reach directly, including the golf and apartment complexes. There's little in the way of on-street parking pressure compared with the western Costa del Sol, but the last supermarkets and pharmacies close earlier than in bigger resorts, so stock up en route if you arrive late.
