Monda: a white village below Sierra de las Nieves
Monda is a small inland village in the Guadalhorce valley, set on the slopes leading up to the Sierra de las Nieves national park. Its restored castle, the Castillo de Monda, sits above the rooftops and now operates as a hotel with wide views over the surrounding hills. Below it, the old core has narrow lanes, the Plaza de la Ermita and the church of Santiago Apóstol. Most people who come here are walkers using the sierra trails, second-home owners, and travellers wanting a quiet base within reach of both Marbella and Málaga. Guaro, Ojén and Coín are the nearest neighbours, and the countryside around town is planted with olives and citrus. Spring and autumn suit the hiking; summer brings villagers out to the plazas in the evening.
The drive from the airport up the A-355
The route leaves the airport on the MA-20 and A-7 towards Marbella for the first stretch, mostly fast dual carriageway along the coastal corridor. The car then turns inland, typically joining the A-355 that links Coín and the Guadalhorce area with the coast near Marbella. From there the road climbs steadily away from the sea into farmland and low hills, with the final approach to Monda on a shorter local road that winds up towards the village. The whole trip usually takes around three-quarters of an hour depending on coastal traffic near the airport. You will notice the change from busy motorway to quiet two-lane road, and the last few minutes tighten as you reach the edge of the old village below the castle.
Practical tips for arriving in Monda
Give the driver a clear drop-off point: the streets inside the old village are narrow and some are stepped or one-way, so vehicles often stop at the edge near the main square or at the castle access road rather than at the door. If you are staying at the Castillo de Monda, mention it when booking, as the approach road is separate from the village core. There is little in the way of taxi ranks in the village itself, so arranging your return in advance is sensible. Bring supplies for arrival outside normal hours, since Monda's few shops keep small-town timetables and close in the afternoon. If you plan to walk in the Sierra de las Nieves, confirm whether your accommodation can point you to trailheads, as several start from tracks outside town.
