Why people travel to Monachil
Monachil sits just southeast of Granada, on the lower slopes of Sierra Nevada, and it draws two very different crowds. Hikers come year-round for Los Cahorros, the gorge on the Monachil river crossed by hanging suspension bridges and cut into the rock — one of the busiest day-walks near Granada. In winter the municipality also takes you toward the Sierra Nevada ski area, so ski and snowboard travellers pass through. The old village itself is small, with steep, narrow streets and a working local feel rather than a resort. Families rent houses in the valley for summer walking, while day-trippers combine Los Cahorros with a visit to Granada and the Alhambra, only a short drive away.
The drive from Málaga Airport to Monachil
Almost the whole journey is motorway. From the airport you join the A-45 north toward Antequera, climbing away from the coast through the hills around Casabermeja. Near Antequera you pick up the A-92 heading east across inland farmland and olive country toward Granada — open, high plateau driving rather than coastal. Approaching Granada you skirt the city on the ring road and turn onto the A-395, the road that climbs toward Sierra Nevada, before dropping down to Monachil itself. The last stretch into the village is noticeably steeper and narrower, with tight turns down to the river valley where Los Cahorros begins. Expect roughly an hour and three quarters in normal conditions; the inland section can feel cold and exposed in winter.

Practical tips for this route
Decide before you travel whether your booking is the village of Monachil or higher up toward the Sierra Nevada ski station — they share a name-link but are far apart in altitude and driving time, and the ski road adds distance. Confirm the exact address, as houses in the valley near Los Cahorros can be on unmarked lanes. In winter, snow and chains can affect the higher roads, so allow extra time and pack warm clothes even if you flew in to warm Málaga. If you plan to walk Los Cahorros the same day, note there is limited parking at the trailhead, which is one reason a door-to-door transfer helps. Bring supplies: the village has small shops but they keep short hours, especially on Sundays.
