What Mijas Pueblo is known for
Mijas Pueblo sits at around 400 metres on the slopes of the Sierra de Mijas, above Fuengirola and the coast. It's a compact white village of narrow, stepped streets, best explored on foot. Landmarks include the oval Plaza de Toros bullring, the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña carved into rock, and the viewpoints along Avenida del Compás looking down over Fuengirola and the Mediterranean. The burro-taxis (donkey rides) on Plaza Virgen de la Peña are a long-standing fixture. Most visitors are day-trippers and couples who come for the views, the craft shops and lunch, plus residents and expats from the surrounding urbanisations. It gets busiest midday in spring and summer; mornings and evenings are quieter and cooler.
The drive up from the coast to the village
From Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport the route runs southwest on the A-7 (or the AP-7 toll motorway) along the coast past Torremolinos and Benalmádena towards Fuengirola. That first stretch is straightforward dual carriageway and covers most of the distance. The change comes at Fuengirola, where you leave the coast and turn inland onto the A-387, which climbs and winds uphill for the last few kilometres to reach the village. Expect the final approach to be noticeably twisty as the road gains height, with the coast opening up behind you. The whole trip is usually around 35 minutes in normal traffic, though the coastal section can slow in July and August and during morning rush hour.

Practical tips for arriving in Mijas Pueblo
Vehicles can't reach most doorways inside the old village — the streets are narrow, pedestrianised and steep. Drivers typically drop off near the main car parks by Avenida del Compás or Plaza Virgen de la Peña, so pack light or expect a short walk uphill with bags to your accommodation. Tell your driver the exact hotel or street name in advance, since GPS routing near the top can be imprecise. The village is cooler and can be windier than the coast, so bring a layer even in summer. If you're staying in one of the Mijas Costa or La Cala de Mijas developments rather than the pueblo itself, confirm that, as they're separate areas lower down near the beach.
