Medina-Sidonia sits on a hill above the La Janda plain in Cádiz province, one of the oldest inhabited towns in Spain. Visitors climb to the Iglesia Mayor de Santa María la Coronada for the panorama over the countryside and, on clear days, toward the coast. The Roman sewers and road under Calle Espíritu Santo, the Arco de la Pastora gate and the ruins of the castle above the old town are the main sights. It's a day-trip and slow-travel destination rather than a resort — walkers, history-minded travellers and food visitors come for its pastries, the alfajores and amarguillos sold in local bakeries, and its butchery tradition. Most activity is in the compact whitewashed old town on foot.

The route runs west almost entirely on dual carriageway and motorway. You leave the airport on the A-7, follow the coastal corridor past Marbella, Estepona and San Roque, then continue toward the Bay of Algeciras before turning inland. The final stretch uses the A-381 across open, rolling farmland and cork-oak country toward Medina-Sidonia, leaving the coast behind. Expect roughly two to two and a half hours depending on traffic around Marbella and San Pedro, which is the slowest part of the coast. The last few kilometres climb to the hilltop town, and the historic centre is a maze of narrow, steep streets, so the drop-off is usually at the edge of the old town rather than at the door.

This is a long inland transfer, so agree the drop-off point in advance: cars can reach the lower edge of the old town, but vehicles cannot pass through the tightest lanes near the Iglesia Mayor, and you may finish on foot with luggage over cobbles. Comfortable shoes help. Break the day-trip idea in mind — many travellers combine Medina-Sidonia with Vejer de la Frontera or the Barbate coast, both close by, so tell the driver if you want a stop. Bakeries selling the local pastries keep normal shop hours and often close midday, so plan around the siesta. There are few services on the A-381 stretch itself, so use the coastal service areas before turning inland if you need fuel, food or a break with children.
