Arriving in Martos beneath La Peña
Martos sits in the province of Jaén, spread below La Peña de Martos, the sheer crag that rises over the town and is visible long before you reach it. It calls itself the world capital of olive oil, and the surrounding countryside is a near-unbroken sea of olive groves. Visitors usually come to see family, do business tied to the oil sector, or explore the old quarter of La Villa, with the Santa Marta church, the old town hall and steep, narrow streets climbing toward the rock. Autumn and winter bring the olive harvest, when the mills run at full capacity. Holy Week and the summer town fairs draw the largest crowds. This is inland Andalusia, not a coastal resort, so expect a working town rather than a tourist strip.
The drive from the coast to inland Jaén
The route leaves the coast entirely and heads inland. From the airport you take the A-45 north toward Antequera, then link onto the A-92 in the direction of Granada. Near Puerto de los Alazores the road climbs and the landscape shifts from coastal to open Andalusian farmland. From there the drive continues via the N-432 corridor through Alcaudete toward Martos, passing olive-covered hills the whole way. Almost all of it is dual carriageway or well-graded main road, with only the last stretch into town becoming slower. Plan on around two hours in normal traffic. There are no coastal switchbacks, but the middle section over the mountains can be affected by fog or low cloud in winter, so the timing can vary by season.

Practical notes for this transfer
Because Martos is a full day's return trip from the coast, agree the pickup point clearly: the old town of La Villa has tight, sloping streets where a car can only reach the edge, so a driver may drop you at a nearby square rather than the door. Give the exact address and, if you are staying in La Villa, a lower meeting point. The journey has few services once you pass Antequera, so use the airport or the A-92 stops for food, fuel and toilets before the final leg. If you arrive during the olive harvest, roads around town carry farm traffic and mills are busy. For winter arrivals, allow extra time for possible fog on the mountain section, and confirm a flexible pickup if your flight lands late.
