Maro: cliffs, coves and the Nerja caves next door
Maro is a small village on the eastern edge of Málaga province, just past Nerja, set above the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo natural area. People come for Playa de Maro, a shingle-and-sand cove reached by a track down from the village, and for the string of hidden beaches like Cala del Cañuelo further east. The old sugar mill (San Joaquín) and the Iglesia de las Maravillas anchor the tiny centre. The Cuevas de Nerja, with their prehistoric paintings and summer concerts, sit a couple of kilometres away. Kayakers and snorkellers work the coast in summer; hikers use the coastal paths in spring and autumn. It is quieter and more rural than Nerja itself, favoured by people who want the beaches without the crowds.
The A-7 run east from the airport
The drive heads east, the opposite direction to Marbella. From the airport you join the A-7 motorway and pass Málaga city, then continue along the coastal corridor through Rincón de la Victoria, Torre del Mar and Torrox. This stretch is fast dual carriageway most of the way, with the Mediterranean on one side and the Sierra de Tejeda inland. Near Nerja the road narrows and climbs slightly as it curves toward the cliffs. The final approach into Maro leaves the main road for a short, gently winding lane down into the village, where streets are tight and parking is limited. Expect roughly an hour in normal traffic; the section around Málaga city can slow at peak times and on summer weekends when beach traffic builds heading east.
Planning your Maro transfer
Because Maro's centre has narrow streets, tell the driver in advance if your accommodation is one of the villas or campsites on the tracks toward Playa de Maro or Cerro Gordo — these access lanes are not always obvious and a set drop-off point can save time. Bring cash or check card acceptance if you plan to visit the Cuevas de Nerja, and book cave tickets ahead in summer. Stock up on groceries in Nerja, as Maro itself has only a couple of small shops. The beaches have limited facilities, so pack water and footwear for the shingle. For the coastal walks, spring and autumn are far more comfortable than midsummer. If you are heading on to Frigiliana or the cave, agree the route with your driver at pickup.
