Los Romanes and Lake Viñuela in the Axarquía
Los Romanes is a small hillside village in the municipality of Viñuela, sitting above the Embalse de La Viñuela, the largest reservoir in Málaga province. It's inland Axarquía country, with the Sierra de Tejeda rising to the north behind Alcaucín and Periana. Most people heading here are residents and second-home owners, many of them northern European, plus walkers who use the village as a base for reservoir-shore paths and the mountain trails toward Zafarraya. There are a couple of local bars and a village shop, but no resort infrastructure — for a supermarket, bank or market you go down to Vélez-Málaga or over to Viñuela. The draw is the quiet, the lake views, and olive- and almond-covered slopes rather than beaches.
The drive from the airport up to Los Romanes
The route runs east on the A-7 coastal motorway past Rincón de la Victoria and Torre del Mar, which is fast and straightforward. You then turn inland near Vélez-Málaga and follow the A-356 up the valley toward the reservoir. The last stretch is the part passengers notice: the road climbs and winds along the lake's edge, with a narrow, steadily rising approach into the village itself. Total distance is roughly 55–60 km and the drive normally takes under an hour, though the final kilometres are slow by nature of the terrain. It's a genuinely scenic run once you leave the coast — dam, open water and mountains — rather than motorway all the way, so allow a little extra if anyone gets carsick on bends.

Practical tips for arriving in Los Romanes
Village addresses here are often vague — many properties are on unnamed lanes or rural tracks (diseminado) scattered around Los Romanes and toward Los Marines. Send a pinned map location and a phone number, and mention any landmark like the village bar or church, because satnav frequently points to the wrong spot. Some access roads are single-track with tight passing points, so confirm whether a large vehicle can reach your door or whether you'll need to meet at the village square. There's very little public transport, so a private transfer both ways makes sense. Do any shopping in Vélez-Málaga or at the Viñuela supermarkets before the final climb, as the village itself has limited hours. Evenings get cool and dark early inland, so arriving before nightfall makes the last winding stretch easier.
