There's a choice between the toll AP-7 and the free A-7; the toll road is faster and less congested past Marbella, especially in summer when the coastal stretch backs up. After Estepona the road climbs slightly inland, passing San Roque and the Sotogrande exit before reaching the Campo de Gibraltar and the turn-off for Los Barrios. The terrain is coastal for most of the way, with the sea on your left and hills rising on your right, then opens into the flatter industrial bay area near the end. Expect roughly an hour and forty minutes without heavy traffic; the final approach into town is straightforward, on wide local roads.

If your final destination is Algeciras port for a ferry, tell your driver in advance — Los Barrios is only about ten minutes from the terminals, but check-in for Ceuta and Tangier crossings closes well before departure, so allow buffer time in summer and during Operación Paso del Estrecho, when the whole area is congested. For Los Alcornocales hikes, confirm the exact trailhead, as some access points are on unpaved forest tracks better reached by a smaller vehicle. Summer weekend traffic on the A-7 between Marbella and Estepona can add half an hour or more; a very early or late arrival avoids the worst of it. If you're staying near Palmones or Guadacorte, note these are separate from the town centre, so give the specific address or hotel name rather than just "Los Barrios".
