Why people travel to Loja
Loja sits in the Genil valley in Granada province, roughly halfway between Málaga and Granada city. It's known as the "ciudad del agua" for the springs and waterfalls at Los Infiernos de Loja, a short walk from the centre. The old town climbs to the Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress, with the church of San Gabriel and narrow lanes below. Many visitors come for the food: nearby Riofrío is famous for its trout farms and sturgeon caviar, served in riverside restaurants. Golfers and quiet-luxury travellers head for La Bobadilla, the country hotel on the outskirts. Walkers use Loja as a base for the Sierra de Loja and the surrounding olive country. It's a working Andalusian town rather than a resort, busiest with day-trippers and food travellers in spring and autumn.
The drive up the A-45 and A-92
The route leaves the airport on the coastal MA-20 or A-7, then turns inland onto the A-45 towards Antequera. This climbs steadily away from the coast through the hills behind Málaga, with a long ascent and a couple of tunnels. Near Antequera the road joins the A-92, the main Sevilla–Granada motorway, and heads east through open farmland and olive groves. It's dual carriageway almost the whole way, so the drive is smooth rather than winding. Loja has its own exits directly off the A-92, so the final approach is short. The total is around 90 kilometres and usually a little over an hour. The scenery shifts clearly from sea to inland plain, and you'll notice the temperature drop and the landscape open out as you gain height.

Practical tips for this route
Tell the driver which part of Loja you need. The town splits between the A-92 corridor at the bottom and the older streets climbing the hill; the lanes near the Alcazaba are steep and narrow, so a vehicle often stops at a nearby square rather than at the door. If you're staying at La Bobadilla, note it's several kilometres outside town off the motorway, not in the centre. Loja works well as a stop between Málaga and Granada, so ask about continuing or being collected later. If you plan to eat trout at Riofrío, it's a separate small village a short drive west of Loja, worth building into the trip. Book the return in advance: Loja has limited taxi availability compared with the coast, especially in the evening.
