What La Cala de Mijas is actually like
La Cala de Mijas sits on the coast between Fuengirola and Marbella, and it is the flat, seaside part of the Mijas municipality — not the whitewashed hill village of Mijas Pueblo, which is a separate drive up the mountain. The main draw is the long stretch of beach: Playa de La Cala, El Bombo and Butibamba, backed by a promenade with chiringuitos and the old watchtower (Torreón). Families and long-stay northern European residents dominate outside summer; golfers head inland to La Cala Resort's three courses and nearby Calanova. The compact centre around the church stays busy in July and August, quieter and mild the rest of the year. It suits people who want a walkable beach town rather than nightlife.
The drive from the airport along the coast
From Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport the route runs southwest on the A-7 coastal motorway, or the faster AP-7 toll road, passing Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola before reaching La Cala de Mijas. It is motorway almost the whole way, so most of the roughly 30-minute journey is straightforward. You leave the A-7 at one of the La Cala exits and drop down toward the seafront on shorter local roads. If your accommodation is at La Cala Resort or one of the golf urbanisations, the final stretch turns inland and climbs on winding lanes into the hills, adding several minutes. In summer, traffic through Fuengirola and around the coastal exits can slow things noticeably, especially on weekend afternoons.

Practical tips for arriving in La Cala de Mijas
Be precise about your destination when booking: "La Cala de Mijas" (the beach town), "Mijas Pueblo" (the hill village) and "La Cala Resort" (the inland golf complex) are three different places, and mixing them up adds real driving time. The golf resort and urbanisations like Calahonda and Riviera del Sol span large areas with several gated entrances, so share the block, urbanisation name or reception point, not just the town. Parking in the small centre is tight in summer, which makes door-to-door drop-off worthwhile. The coastal train line ends at Fuengirola, so there is no direct rail link onward — a private transfer or bus covers the last leg. Supermarkets and beach restaurants are within walking distance of most central lodgings.
