The character changes completely after Estepona, where the road turns inland and climbs into Sierra Bermeja on the MA-8301, a genuine mountain road with continuous hairpin bends, blind curves and steep drops as it crosses the ridge and descends into the Genal Valley toward Jubrique. Expect the final stretch to be slow going regardless of driving; the winding section is where most of the journey time is spent. Total time is usually around two hours. Passengers prone to motion sickness will feel this last part, so it's worth sitting in front and keeping water handy.

Give your driver the exact street or the name of your casa rural in advance, because vehicles can only reach the lower entrances of the village and the upper lanes are pedestrian — you may need to walk the last stretch with luggage, sometimes uphill. Mobile coverage weakens on the MA-8301, so download your offline map and confirm the meeting point before leaving the airport. There are no petrol stations or large shops once you leave Estepona, so buy anything you need on the coast. The mountain road is best driven in daylight; a late-evening flight means a dark, twisting final approach. In winter, mist and occasional ice can affect the higher sections, so allow extra time and check conditions if arriving between December and February.
