What Jimena de la Frontera is known for
Jimena de la Frontera is a white town in the interior of Cádiz province, spread across a hill topped by its Moorish castle, whose walls and cistern overlook the Hozgarganta river valley. It sits on the edge of Los Alcornocales Natural Park, one of Europe's largest cork oak forests, which makes it a base for hikers and birdwatchers rather than beachgoers. There's a long-established community of British and northern European residents, so you'll hear plenty of English in the bars around Calle Sevilla and the lower town. Walkers come year-round, though spring and autumn are busiest; summer brings quiet, hot afternoons. The Roman baths (Baños de la Reina) by the river and the old wheat-cracked streets climbing to the castle are the main things people go up to see.
The drive from Málaga Airport
The route leaves the airport on the coastal motorway heading southwest, following the AP-7/A-7 corridor past Marbella, Estepona and the San Roque area. Most of this stretch is fast dual carriageway with the Mediterranean on your left; the AP-7 toll section past Marbella saves time in summer traffic. Near Sotogrande and San Roque the road turns inland onto the A-405, and the character changes completely: you climb away from the coast through rolling farmland and cork oak country, with the town's castle visible on its hill before you arrive. The final approach into Jimena involves narrow, steeply graded streets, so drivers often stop in the lower town rather than attempting the top. Allow a little under two hours in normal conditions.

Practical tips for this route
Give your driver the specific part of town you need: the lower town and the streets up towards the castle are very different to reach, and some vehicles can't manage the top. If you're staying at a country property (finca) in Los Alcornocales, share a pin location — many are down unmarked tracks that satnav mislabels. The town has limited late-night services, so arrange onward pickups in advance if your flight lands late. There's no direct train to the airport and the local Jimena station is on a slow line, which is why a door-to-door transfer makes sense here. Pack for the interior climate: it's noticeably hotter than the coast in summer and cooler on winter evenings. If you plan day trips to Gibraltar or Sotogrande, note both are back down on the coast, roughly half an hour away.
