Jerez is the home of sherry, and most visitors come for the bodegas: González Byass (Tío Pepe), Sandeman, Lustau and Fundador all run tours in the centre. Horse lovers head to the Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre for its dressage shows, while May brings the Feria del Caballo, when the Parque González Hontoria fills with casetas. Motorsport fans arrive for the Circuito de Jerez-Ángel Nieto, usually hosting the Spanish MotoGP in spring. Flamenco is taken seriously here, especially in the Santiago and San Miguel barrios and during the Festival de Jerez each February. The old town rewards walking: the Alcázar, the Cathedral and Plaza del Arenal are close together. Many combine Jerez with El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda nearby.

The route runs west along the coast from Málaga on the A-7 and AP-7, passing Marbella, Estepona and the exits toward San Roque and Algeciras. From there the road turns inland on the A-381, crossing the Los Alcornocales natural park with its cork-oak hills and open cattle land before dropping toward Jerez. It's motorway or dual carriageway almost the whole way, with tolled sections on the AP-7 around the Costa del Sol. Expect a little under two and a half hours in normal traffic; the coastal stretch near Marbella and Fuengirola can slow down in summer and at rush hour. The final approach into Jerez is flat and straightforward, but the historic centre has narrow one-way streets where a car is dropped nearby rather than at the door.

If your reason for coming is a bodega tour, book it in advance and check the day: several cellars close on Sundays or run reduced hours, and slots fill fast during festival weeks. During the MotoGP weekend and the Feria del Caballo in May, hotels sell out across Jerez, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar, so a fixed pickup time avoids surprises. Jerez has its own smaller airport, but Málaga offers far more long-haul and international connections, which is why many travellers still land here. Tell your driver if your accommodation is inside the pedestrianised old town so a suitable drop-off point near Plaza del Arenal or the Alcázar can be arranged. In summer, an early departure from Málaga sidesteps the worst of the coastal traffic.
