What Jaén offers beyond the olive groves
Jaén is the provincial capital, set below the Cerro de Santa Catalina, whose hilltop castle now houses a Parador with wide views over the surrounding sea of olive trees. The Renaissance Cathedral, designed largely by Andrés de Vandelvira, dominates the centre, and beneath the Palacio de Villardompardo lie the Baños Árabes, among the largest surviving Arab baths in Spain. Most visitors are cultural travellers and people using Jaén as a base for Úbeda and Baeza, both UNESCO-listed and about 45 minutes away, or for hiking in the Sierra de Cazorla further east. Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons; summers are genuinely hot inland. The old streets around the cathedral and Santa María square are narrow and steep, worth knowing before you arrive with luggage.
The drive north through Antequera and the olive plains
The route runs almost entirely on motorway. From the airport you take the A-7 briefly, then the A-45 north towards Antequera, climbing through hills before the pass near Antequera itself. From there the road joins the A-92 heading east, then the A-44 north towards Jaén and Bailén. The middle stretch crosses open, elevated country; the final section descends into the Guadalquivir basin, where olive groves cover the terrain in every direction to the horizon. It is a comfortable drive of roughly two and a quarter hours with no difficult mountain descents at the end, unlike many coastal routes. The last kilometres into Jaén itself involve city traffic and the climb towards the centre, which sits against the hillside below Santa Catalina.

Practical points for this airport-to-Jaén run
Because the journey inland takes over two hours, agree on where exactly you want to be dropped: the historic centre near the cathedral has narrow, one-way streets and limited stopping, so a driver may set you down at the edge and you walk the last stretch. Hotels near Plaza de la Constitución or the newer avenues are easier for vehicle access. There is little worth stopping for between Antequera and Jaén, so plan a bathroom break at one of the service stations on the A-92 or A-44 rather than expecting frequent stops. Bring water in summer, as the interior heat is significant. If you continue to Úbeda, Baeza or the Sierra de Cazorla, arrange it in advance, since these are well beyond Jaén and add real distance to the trip.
