Iznájar sits on a rocky hill above the largest reservoir in Andalusia, the Embalse de Iznájar. Down at the water, the Valdearenas area has a freshwater beach, a small marina and picnic grounds that draw families and swimmers through summer. It's a quiet inland village in Córdoba province rather than a coastal resort, popular with day-trippers, walkers and people touring nearby Rute, famous for its anís and Christmas turrón, plus Priego de Córdoba and Loja within easy reach.

The route leaves the coast almost immediately, heading north on the A-45 motorway past Antequera. From there the road turns toward the Córdoba–Granada border country, following the A-333 through Rute and the hills around the reservoir. The terrain shifts from motorway to rolling olive groves, and the final approach into Iznájar is a climbing, curving road up to the hilltop centre. Expect around an hour and a half for roughly 110 kilometres, most of it fast dual carriageway with a slower, winding last stretch. Passengers usually notice the change from the busy coastal fringe to open inland country, and the first sight of the reservoir and the village crowning its hill as you draw close.

Iznájar's old town is built for donkeys, not cars: the top streets around the castle and Plaza de las Cruces are steep, narrow and largely pedestrian, so agree a realistic drop-off point near the entrance to the historic centre rather than expecting to reach a door at the summit. If you're staying by the reservoir at Valdearenas rather than in the village, make that clear when booking, as they are separate stops a short drive apart. There's little through traffic and few taxis waiting locally, so arrange your return in advance. Bring anything you need from the airport, as shops here are small and close early. For summer swimming at the reservoir beach, morning arrivals avoid the strongest heat on the exposed shore.
