Gualchos and its coast at Castell de Ferro
The municipality of Gualchos sits on the Costa Tropical in Granada province and has two very different halves. The old village of Gualchos is inland, perched above the coast among terraced hills with narrow, steep streets and a whitewashed centre around the Iglesia de San Miguel. Down at sea level is Castell de Ferro, the busy coastal town where most visitors stay, with a long pebble-and-sand beach, a small fishing harbour, and a watchtower on the headland. Summer brings mainly Spanish families and second-home owners from Granada city; the greenhouses covering the surrounding slopes grow tropical fruit and out-of-season produce. It is a quieter, less international stretch of coast than Nerja or Almuñécar to the west.
The A-7 coastal drive east from Málaga
The route runs east on the A-7 Autovía del Mediterráneo for almost the entire way, so it is fast motorway from the airport, past Nerja, then through a series of tunnels and viaducts as the road hugs the mountains around La Herradura and Almuñécar. You pass Motril before reaching the Castell de Ferro exit. Reaching the coastal town is straightforward; if your destination is the old village of Gualchos itself, the final stretch is a climb inland on a narrow, winding local road with tight bends, which slows the last few kilometres. Expect around 100 minutes in normal traffic. The scenery shifts from open coast to steep, tunnelled mountainside — the greenhouse-covered slopes near Motril are unmistakable as you approach.
Practical tips for arriving in Gualchos
Tell your driver clearly whether you are heading for Castell de Ferro on the coast or the hilltop village of Gualchos — they are several kilometres and a steep climb apart, and confusing them adds time. In Castell de Ferro, apartments near the seafront often sit on pedestrianised or one-way streets, so pin an exact drop-off point rather than just a building name. If you land late, note there are few services on the final approach to the old village, so stock up in Motril if you need a supermarket. There is no airport nearer than Málaga for scheduled flights; Granada's airport is inland and poorly connected to this coast. For beach stays, the A-7 exit signed Castell de Ferro is the one to use.
