Why people travel to Grazalema
Grazalema is a white village at the centre of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, in Cádiz province. Most visitors come to hike: the Garganta Verde gorge, the Pinsapar fir forest and the climb to El Torreón, the highest peak in the province, all start near here. Several of these trails sit in a restricted zone and need a permit. The village itself is compact, built on a slope around the Plaza de España and the church of La Aurora, with steep, narrow streets and workshops still weaving the wool blankets Grazalema is known for. It rains more here than almost anywhere in Spain, which keeps the hills green. Walkers arrive spring and autumn; day-trippers combine it with Zahara de la Sierra, Benaocaz and nearby Ronda.
The drive from Málaga Airport through Ronda
The route runs inland and climbs steadily. From the airport you take the coastal motorway west before turning up towards Ronda, either through the Guadalhorce valley or the mountain road via the Puerto del Viento. This first stretch is fast, but the final section is not: from Ronda you follow the A-372 across the sierra to Grazalema, a winding two-lane road with tight bends, exposed drops and slow-moving traffic in high season. The last few kilometres descend into the village on a narrow approach. Expect around two hours in total, longer if you stop in Ronda, which many passengers do to see the Puente Nuevo. The scenery shifts from coast to olive groves to bare limestone ridges, and the temperature usually drops noticeably as you gain altitude.

Practical tips for this route
Parking inside Grazalema is very limited and the old streets are too tight for most cars, so agree a drop-off point near the edge of the village with your driver rather than expecting to reach the door. If you plan to walk the restricted trails (Garganta Verde, El Torreón, Pinsapar, Llanos del Rabel), book the free permit in advance through the natural park office; slots fill up in spring, autumn and at weekends, and access is capped in summer for fire risk. Pack layers and a waterproof even in warm months, as the sierra is genuinely wetter and cooler than the coast. There are few services on the A-372, so use Ronda for fuel, cash and larger shops. A morning arrival gives the best light and the calmest driving on the mountain road.
