Gaucín, a mountain village above the Genal valley
Gaucín sits at around 600 metres in the Serranía de Ronda, one of the white villages inland from the coast. Its landmark is the Castillo del Águila (Eagle's Castle), a Moorish fortress with clear-day views across to the Rock of Gibraltar and, occasionally, the Moroccan coast. The narrow lanes around the Iglesia de San Sebastián draw walkers, artists and residents who have settled here rather than day-trippers passing through. It's a base for hiking the chestnut forests of the Genal valley and reaching neighbouring villages like Jimena de la Frontera and Casares. Spring and autumn are the busiest, when temperatures suit walking. The village is quiet in winter and hot but shaded in summer, with small guesthouses and restaurants rather than large hotels.
The drive from the airport up the A-377
The route runs west along the AP-7/A-7 coastal motorway past Marbella, Estepona and Manilva, which is fast and straightforward. The character changes once you turn inland near Manilva or San Enrique de Guadiaro onto the A-377, which climbs steadily toward Gaucín. This final stretch is a single-carriageway mountain road with continuous bends, rising through open hillside with the coast dropping away behind you. Expect the last section to feel slow compared with the motorway — the curves keep speeds down and some passengers prone to travel sickness feel it here. The total journey is usually around an hour and three-quarters. On a clear approach the views back toward the sea and Gibraltar are the payoff for the winding climb.

Practical points for arriving in Gaucín
Give your accommodation's exact location in advance: Gaucín's core is a maze of steep, narrow one-way streets where a car often can't reach the door. Ask where the driver can safely stop and whether there's parking near your guesthouse, as many properties expect you to walk the last stretch with luggage. Book the return pickup ahead — there is no meaningful taxi rank waiting in the village, and the mountain road is not a place to arrange transport at the last minute. If you're prone to car sickness, sit in the front and eat lightly before the A-377 climb. Bring layers even in summer, as evenings at this altitude are cooler than on the coast. Stock up on anything specific at the coast, since village shops are small and close early.
