Fuente del Conde and the Iznájar reservoir
Fuente del Conde is a small hamlet (pedanía) in the municipality of Iznájar, in the south of Córdoba province, close to where Córdoba, Granada and Málaga provinces meet. It sits near the Embalse de Iznájar, the largest reservoir in Andalusia, whose shoreline draws people for kayaking, paddleboarding and swimming at spots like the Valdearenas beach area in summer. The main town of Iznájar climbs a rocky outcrop above the water, crowned by a castle and the church of Santiago, with narrow whitewashed lanes and the well-known Patio de las Comedias. Most visitors are day-trippers, rural-tourism guests staying in cortijos and casas rurales, and residents of the surrounding olive-growing countryside rather than beach-resort tourists.
Driving inland from the coast to Iznájar
This is an inland route, not a coastal one. From Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport the driver takes the A-7 briefly and then the A-45 motorway north towards Antequera, climbing away from the coast through the hills around Casabermeja. Near Antequera the route joins the A-92 and then the A-333 towards Iznájar and Rute, crossing rolling olive country in the Subbética. The final stretch approaches the reservoir on regional roads that wind as they drop towards the water and the scattered hamlets around Iznájar, including Fuente del Conde. Expect roughly an hour and a half. Most of the drive is fast dual carriageway; the last part is slower, with bends and gradients as you leave the main road for the shore.
Practical tips for this route
Because Fuente del Conde is a dispersed rural hamlet rather than a town with clear street numbers, send an exact pin or the name of your cortijo, casa rural or the nearest crossroads before travelling; sat-nav can be vague around the reservoir's back roads. Mobile coverage dips in some valleys, so save the address offline. There is very little in the way of shops or late-night services near the water, so consider a stop in Antequera or Iznájar town for groceries and fuel on the way in. Rural properties often have steep or unpaved final approaches, so mention this so a suitable vehicle is sent. For summer trips to the reservoir beaches, an early or midday arrival avoids driving the narrow shoreline lanes after dark.
