What Frigiliana is: a white hill village above Nerja
Frigiliana sits in the Axarquía hills, a few kilometres inland and above Nerja, with the Mediterranean visible below. Its Barribarto quarter is the reason most people come: steep cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses and ceramic plaques narrating the 1569 Morisco rebellion that ended on the El Fuerte hilltop above the village. It has no beach of its own, so visitors usually pair it with Nerja's coves and the Nerja Caves. The village still runs a sugar-cane honey mill producing miel de caña, one of the last in Europe. Day-trippers dominate in high summer and around the late-August Festival de las Tres Culturas; walkers and residents, including a settled international community, keep it busy in spring and autumn.
The drive from the airport along the A-7 and up to Frigiliana
The route runs east along the A-7 coastal motorway, passing Rincón de la Victoria, Torre del Mar and Vélez-Málaga. It is fast, dual-carriageway driving for most of the way, with the sea on your right for long stretches. Near Nerja you leave the motorway and pick up the MA-5105, which climbs roughly seven kilometres inland and uphill to the village. That last section is the part passengers notice: a steadily rising road with tight bends and gradients as it works up into the hills. Total driving time is usually around 55 minutes in normal traffic, though the coastal corridor can slow noticeably on summer weekends and holiday afternoons when beach traffic backs up around Torre del Mar and Nerja.

Drop-off points and getting into the old streets
Cars cannot drive into the upper Barribarto lanes, which are stepped and too narrow for vehicles. Drivers drop off at the lower entrance to the village, around the car park near the Tres Culturas area on the main access road; from there most accommodation involves a climb on foot. Ask your driver to set you down at the highest accessible point, and pack for cobbles and steps rather than wheeling a heavy case uphill. If you are staying in an old-town house, get exact directions and a meeting point from your host in advance, as street names mean little on the ground. For a beach day, ask about a return that also stops in Nerja rather than doubling back later.
