Facinas is a small village in the municipality of Tarifa, sitting inland below the Sierra de la Plata in Cádiz province. It's cattle country — the local retinto beef comes from the pastures around here — and it stays much calmer than the coast a few kilometres away. People come to be close to the wind-and-kite beaches of Valdevaqueros and Bolonia without paying Tarifa-town prices, or to walk in the Parque Natural del Estrecho. The Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia at Bolonia are a short drive down towards the sea. Summer brings surfers, windsurfers and families to nearby Zahara de los Atunes and Barbate; spring and autumn suit hikers and birdwatchers, since the Strait is a major migration crossing point. Facinas itself is largely residential and agricultural.

The route runs almost the entire length of the Costa del Sol before turning towards the Atlantic. You leave the airport on the A-7/AP-7, passing Marbella, Estepona and Sotogrande, with the coast on one side and the Sierra Bermeja rising inland. Near Algeciras the road climbs and the scenery changes: you skirt the bay, then join the N-340 heading west towards Tarifa. This last stretch crosses open, windswept hills where you'll often see wind turbines and, on clear days, the Moroccan coast across the Strait. The final approach to Facinas leaves the N-340 for a short local road into the village. Expect around an hour and three-quarters in normal traffic, longer in summer when the Marbella–Estepona section slows down.

This is a genuinely long transfer, so it's worth timing your flight to avoid arriving during the summer afternoon rush around Marbella and San Pedro. The wind is the defining feature of the area: the Levante (easterly) can be strong for days, which is why the region is a windsurfing capital, but it also means driving conditions on the exposed N-340 near Tarifa feel gusty — nothing to worry about with an experienced driver. If your final address is a country house (cortijo) or rural accommodation outside the village, share a precise pin or coordinates, as some access lanes are unmarked. Stock up on essentials in Facinas or Tahivilla, since shops are limited and the nearest large supermarkets are towards Barbate or Algeciras. Confirm whether you'll want onward trips to Bolonia or Tarifa in advance.
