Why people travel to El Chorro
El Chorro is an inland village built around a railway station and the Guadalhorce reservoirs, and almost everyone arriving has one thing in mind: the Caminito del Rey. This restored walkway is pinned to the vertical walls of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge, and slots must be booked online well in advance. The area also draws rock climbers, who come for the limestone faces year-round, and hikers heading for the lakes at Embalse del Conde de Guadalhorce. Nearby you can visit the white town of Álora with its Arab castle, the Mozarabic ruins of Bobastro above Ardales, and lakeside picnic spots. Spring and autumn are busiest; summer brings intense heat in the gorge, so early starts are normal.
The drive up the Guadalhorce valley
The route leaves the airport and heads inland on the A-357 towards Cártama, following the Guadalhorce river valley away from the coast. After turning onto the A-343 you pass through farmland and the towns of Pizarra and Álora, whose white houses climb the hillside. Beyond Álora the road narrows and begins to climb and twist as it approaches El Chorro, with the reservoirs and rock faces coming into view on the final stretch. Expect around an hour in total. This is not a motorway run all the way: the first half is fast dual carriageway, the second half is a slower two-lane road with bends. Drivers usually set down near the village or at the Caminito access points, depending on where you start your walk.
Planning your transfer around the Caminito
The Caminito del Rey is a one-way walk: you enter at the northern gate near Ardales and finish near the El Chorro railway station, or the shuttle bus links the two ends. Tell your driver which entrance your ticket specifies, because the two access points are a fair drive apart around the reservoirs. Book your walkway slot before arranging pick-up times, then allow three to four hours for the walk plus the shuttle. Wear closed shoes and bring water and a hat; there is little shade. Facilities in the village are limited to a few bars and a station, so eat or stock up in Álora if needed. If your flight lands late in the day, consider staying overnight nearby rather than rushing an afternoon slot.
