El Burgo is a small inland village on the Río Turón, deep in the Serranía de Ronda and on the edge of the Sierra de las Nieves National Park, designated in 2021 for its rare pinsapo (Spanish fir) forests. People come here to walk and cycle rather than for beaches: the GR-243 long-distance path passes through, and routes climb towards Puerto del Viento on the road to Ronda. Griffon vultures nest in the surrounding limestone crags. The village itself has a compact centre around the church of San Agustín and the ruined castle. Most visitors are hikers, birdwatchers and rural-tourism guests staying in casas rurales, busiest in spring and autumn when the heat is manageable.

The route leaves the airport on the A-357, the fast corridor that runs inland along the Guadalhorce valley past Cártama and Pizarra. From there the road turns towards Casarabonela, Alozaina and Yunquera on the A-366, and the character changes completely: motorway-style driving gives way to a two-lane mountain road with steady climbs, bends and olive and pine slopes on either side. The final approach into El Burgo drops through a series of curves towards the river valley. Expect roughly an hour and a half. It is worth telling your driver if you are prone to motion sickness, as the last third of the journey is genuinely winding. The scenery on the Yunquera stretch, with the Sierra de las Nieves ahead, is the payoff.

El Burgo has limited services, so stock up before arriving if you land late: there are supermarkets in the Guadalhorce towns like Cártama and Coín, but shops in the village keep short hours and close on Sundays. Fuel is scarce on the A-366 itself, so a booked transfer avoids the hassle of finding a station. If your accommodation is a casa rural outside the village, send the exact coordinates or a pinned location, since rural addresses here are often just a track name and can be hard to find after dark. Mobile coverage weakens on the mountain sections. Bring layers even in summer: at this altitude, evenings are noticeably cooler than on the coast, and mornings for hiking can be cold in spring.
