What Cumbres Verdes is and who goes there
Cumbres Verdes is a hillside residential area above La Zubia, on the northern edge of the Sierra Nevada National Park and about 10 km south of Granada city. It sits at the start of walking routes toward the Llano de la Perdiz, Trevenque and the historic Camino de los Neveros, so most arrivals are hikers, mountain-bikers and second-home owners rather than beach traffic. Winter brings people combining a Granada base with Sierra Nevada skiing; spring and autumn are peak hiking seasons. The urbanización is spread over steep streets with detached houses, so there is no single centre — day-to-day shops and restaurants are down in La Zubia. Many travellers pair a stay here with the Alhambra and central Granada, a short drive down the valley.
The drive from Málaga Airport via the A-92
The route is almost entirely motorway. From the airport you join the A-7 and A-45 north past Antequera, then switch onto the A-92 heading east across the Guadalix and Loja countryside toward Granada. This inland stretch is open, rolling terrain with olive groves and the odd long climb, not coastal road. Approaching Granada you take the ring road (A-44/GR-30) south toward La Zubia, and only the final few kilometres change character: the road narrows and climbs in tight bends from La Zubia up into Cumbres Verdes itself. Total distance is around 150 km and the run typically takes close to two hours, with most of that at steady motorway speed. The last uphill section is the only slow part.

Practical tips for this specific route
Give the driver your exact street and house number in Cumbres Verdes, not just the area name — the urbanización climbs across many similarly named lanes and GPS often drops you at the wrong terrace. If you are heading up for hiking or skiing, note that there are few late-night shops near the top, so stock up in La Zubia or central Granada on the way. In winter the final climb can be icy or occasionally snowed at the higher streets; ask about conditions before travel. The A-92 has service areas around Antequera and Loja, useful with children on the roughly two-hour run. If your plan also includes the Alhambra, remember its tickets must be booked well in advance and it is a separate short drive from here.
