Arriving in Colomera in the Montes de Granada
Colomera is a small hilltop town northwest of Granada city, in the olive-growing country of the Montes Orientales. Its clearest landmark is the Iglesia de la Encarnación, a large fortress-like church raised on a rock outcrop above the tightly packed white houses, visible long before you reach the centre. Below the town lies the Embalse de Colomera reservoir, used by local anglers and walkers. Most visitors are people with family roots here, rural-tourism guests renting village houses, and hikers exploring the surrounding hills and neighbouring villages like Benalúa de las Villas, Montillana and Moclín. It stays quiet most of the year, busiest around the summer feria and during the autumn olive harvest, when the surrounding groves are worked.
The drive from Málaga Airport to Colomera
The journey is almost entirely on fast roads until the final stretch. From the airport you join the A-7 and A-45 north towards Antequera, then take the A-92 east across the interior towards Granada. Rather than entering the city, the route skirts it on the ring road and picks up the A-44 heading north. You then leave the motorway and follow local roads through the olive country towards Colomera, passing villages such as Benalúa de las Villas. This last section is a two-lane country road with bends and gradients as you climb towards the town, and the final approach into Colomera itself is narrow, with steep streets around the church. Expect roughly two hours door to door, more if the harvest brings farm traffic.
Practical tips for this transfer
Colomera has few services, so plan around that. There is no train and limited local bus, which makes a direct transfer the simplest option after a long flight. If your accommodation is a village house in the old part of town, share the exact address and a phone number in advance: the upper streets are steep and narrow, and the driver may need to set you down at a nearby wider point and help with luggage on foot. Do any major supermarket shopping in Granada or at a stop en route, as options in the town are small. For late arrivals, note there is little open at night. If you plan day trips to Granada, the Alhambra or Moclín castle, arrange the return pickup time when you book.
