What Colmenar is known for
Colmenar sits at around 700 metres in the Alta Axarquía, on the northern edge of the Montes de Málaga. It's a working farming town rather than a resort, known for its honey, olive oil and cured pork products, and the Casa Museo de la Miel explains the local beekeeping tradition. The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dominates the compact centre, where streets are steep and narrow. Most people who come here are day-trippers heading into the natural park, buyers of local produce, or travellers passing through on the way to villages like Riogordo, Casabermeja, Periana and the Alfarnate valley. Winters are noticeably cooler than on the coast, and spring brings green hills before the summer heat.
The drive up through the Montes de Málaga
From the airport the route joins the A-45, the main road towards Antequera and Córdoba, and climbs steadily north out of the city into the Montes de Málaga. This is a dual carriageway with sustained gradients and a series of cuttings and viaducts as it gains altitude, so you'll feel the road working uphill rather than the flat coastal motorways. Near Casabermeja the road forks and you take the A-356 towards Vélez-Málaga, with Colmenar signposted shortly after. The whole trip is roughly 35 kilometres and usually about 40 minutes. The final approach leaves the fast road for the town's tighter streets, and the temperature drop as you climb is often obvious, especially in winter.
Practical tips for this route
Give your driver the exact street or lodging name in advance: Colmenar's centre has steep one-way lanes where a large vehicle can't always reach the door, and you may be dropped a short walk away. Pack a light layer even in summer — evenings at this altitude are cooler than the coast. If you plan to explore the surrounding villages or the Montes de Málaga natural park, note that public transport up here is limited, so arranging return transport or a hire car in advance saves trouble. The old scenic road through the park (past the Lagar de Torrijos) is slower and winding; a private transfer takes the faster A-45 instead. Local shops and produce stalls tend to close in the early afternoon, so time arrivals accordingly.
