Most visitors are Spanish families and second-home owners, busiest in July and August; spring and autumn draw walkers exploring the coves and the coast path. The compact centre has grey-sand beaches, a handful of chiringuitos serving fresh fish, and steep lanes climbing toward the hillside village of Gualchos inland. It is a place for slow beach days rather than nightlife or resorts.

The route runs east from the airport almost entirely on the A-7 Autovía del Mediterráneo, the coastal motorway. After skirting Rincón de la Victoria and Torre del Mar you pass Nerja, then cross into Granada province near Almuñécar, where the road threads a series of tunnels and viaducts through the cliffs. You continue past Salobreña's hilltop castle and around Motril before the final stretch to Castell de Ferro. It is roughly 130 km and usually about an hour and forty minutes, most of it fast dual carriageway with sea views on the right. The last part is the most scenic, hugging headlands and dipping into small coastal towns. The exit for Castell de Ferro drops you straight into the town, with no long winding mountain approach.

Because Castell de Ferro has no train station and limited bus links, a direct transfer avoids a change in Motril, the regional hub for onward buses. Tell the driver which end of town you need: the beachfront apartments and the streets climbing toward Gualchos are tight and one-way in places, so pinpoint the nearest chiringuito or the church as a reference. In July and August the A-7 exits around Motril and Salobreña can slow with beach traffic, so allow extra time for early-afternoon arrivals. There are motorway service stops near Nerja and Almuñécar if you need a break with children. Stock up on essentials before arriving on a Sunday, as the small local shops keep short hours out of the peak weeks.
