What Carchuna is known for
Carchuna is a coastal village in the municipality of Motril, on Granada's Costa Tropical. Its long dark-sand and pebble beach draws windsurfers and kitesurfers, since the exposed shore catches steady afternoon wind. Behind the seafront you'll see the greenhouses (invernaderos) that grow much of the area's subtropical produce. The 18th-century Castillo de Carchuna sits close to the beach, a squat coastal defence fort. Next door is Calahonda, a slightly livelier resort with more bars and holiday apartments, while Motril town, with its shops and market, is a short drive west. Visitors are mostly Spanish families and second-home owners in summer, plus water-sports enthusiasts and quieter off-season travellers who want a beach base without the crowds of the Málaga side.
The drive along the A-7 coastal motorway
The route runs east on the A-7 Autovía del Mediterráneo for almost the entire way, roughly 110 km and about an hour and a quarter in normal traffic. After leaving the airport you pass Málaga city, then the road hugs the coast through a series of tunnels and high viaducts around Nerja, Almuñécar and Salobreña — the landscape shifts from built-up coast to cliffs and terraced hillsides. You'll notice the sugar-mill chimney and the rock outcrop as you approach Salobreña and Motril. Beyond Motril the motorway continues a short way before the exit for Carchuna and Calahonda, where a brief stretch of local road drops you down to the seafront. It's a fast, mostly straightforward journey with steady sea views on the right.
Practical tips for arriving in Carchuna
Carchuna spreads out in low blocks between the beach and the greenhouses, and street numbering along the seafront is patchy, so give your driver the name of your apartment complex, hotel or the nearest landmark — the Castillo or a specific beach chiringuito works well. Public transport here is limited: buses between Motril and the coastal villages are infrequent, and there is no direct airport connection, which is why a door-to-door transfer makes sense. Stock up on supplies in Motril or at the Calahonda shops if you arrive late, as smaller Carchuna businesses close early out of season. If you're coming for the wind sports, the afternoon breeze that makes the beach good for kiting can also make evenings cool — bring a layer even in summer.
