Capileira sits at around 1,436 metres on the southern flank of the Sierra Nevada, the highest of the three Poqueira gorge villages above Pampaneira and Bubión. Most visitors are hikers: Capileira is a common starting point for routes up Mulhacén, mainland Spain's highest peak, and in summer a park bus runs towards the high country. The village is also known for its weaving workshops, cured meats and mountain restaurants. Spring and autumn draw walkers; winter brings snow and quieter streets. The parish church of Santa María la Mayor and the small local museum sit near the central square, where footpaths down into the gorge begin.

The route leaves the airport on the A-7 coastal motorway, then turns inland on the A-44 towards Granada. Before reaching the city you branch east on the A-348 through Lanjarón and Órgiva, the market town at the foot of the Alpujarras. From there the road climbs sharply on the A-4132 and GR-421, threading through Pampaneira and Bubión before the final stretch to Capileira. Expect a fast, easy first half on motorway, then a genuinely mountainous second half: tight switchbacks, steep gradients and single-lane sections through the villages. The full journey is roughly 155 kilometres and takes about two and a half hours. The last thirty minutes are slow going, with sharp bends and dramatic drops into the gorge, so allow time and expect a noticeable change in temperature as you gain altitude.

Vehicles cannot drive into the heart of Capileira; the old-town lanes are too narrow and often stepped. Drivers drop off at the entrance car parks near the main road, so pack light or be ready to carry bags a short way uphill to your accommodation. Tell your driver the exact street and any nearby landmark, as GPS pins in the gorge can be unreliable. If you arrive in winter, mention it in advance: snow and ice on the climb through the villages occasionally require chains or a delayed departure. There are few fuel stops after Órgiva, so any breaks are best taken there. Motion sickness is common on the final switchbacks, so sit forward and keep water handy. Book the return early, as taxis rarely wait in the village on demand.
