Canillas de Albaida is a small white village in the eastern Axarquía, sitting on the edge of the Sierra Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama natural park at roughly 580 metres. Its steep lanes climb to the church of Nuestra Señora de la Expectación, and the Ermita de Santa Ana marks the entrance from the Cómpeta road. Most visitors are hikers and walkers heading to La Fábrica de la Luz picnic area and the trails towards El Lucero peak, plus wine lovers drawn to the local moscatel and sweet raisins. It's also popular with northern European residents who own houses here and in neighbouring Cómpeta, Árchez and Sayalonga. Spring and autumn are the busiest walking seasons; summer brings quieter days and cool mountain evenings compared with the coast below.

The journey runs about 65 kilometres and usually takes around 80 minutes. From the airport you join the A-7 motorway eastbound past Málaga, Rincón de la Victoria and Torre del Mar, a fast coastal stretch with sea on one side and greenhouse-covered hills on the other. Near Algarrobo or Torre del Mar you turn inland and climb the MA-105 through the river valleys, passing Sayalonga and Árchez. The last section is the memorable part: a narrow, winding mountain road that twists steadily upward through terraced vineyards toward Cómpeta, then on to Canillas. The final approach into the village itself is tight, so a driver who knows the turns and the parking limits at the edge of the old centre makes a real difference on this route.

The old core of Canillas is largely pedestrian, with steep cobbled lanes that vehicles cannot enter. Ask your driver to set you down at the car park near the entrance to the village or by the Ermita de Santa Ana, and be ready for a short walk uphill with luggage — soft bags are easier than hard cases here. There are only a few small shops, so buy anything you need in Torre del Mar or Cómpeta on the way up rather than expecting a late-night supermarket. Mountain roads can be affected by mist or the occasional autumn downpour, so allow extra time for evening arrivals. If your accommodation is a rural house between Canillas and Cómpeta, send the exact coordinates in advance, as postal addresses on the outskirts are often unreliable.
