The first two-thirds are fast, straightforward motorway and dual carriageway; the character changes once you leave the reservoir road. The final approach is a genuine mountain climb with tight bends and steady gradients, so passengers prone to motion sickness should sit in front and keep water handy. Total driving time is usually a little over an hour, depending on coastal traffic near Vélez-Málaga in high season.

The old centre of Canillas de Aceituno is a maze of narrow, steep, one-way lanes where larger vehicles cannot reach every door. Send your exact address or accommodation name in advance so the driver can identify the nearest reachable drop-off point; you may need to walk the last short stretch uphill with luggage. There are limited shops, so stock up in Vélez-Málaga on the way if you need groceries or pharmacy items, particularly on Sundays when village services are minimal. If your plan is to hike La Maroma, arrange an early pickup and confirm the trailhead access, as the paved road above the village is rough. Book the return leg ahead, since taxis do not wait in the village and coverage is thin.
